An environmental health expert, Dr. Mehrdad Javaherian leads as Principal and Technical Director of LRM Consulting, Inc. Through the firm’s focus on the private sector, Dr. Mehrdad Javaherian consults for companies such as Lake Tahoe Investments on issues like methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE).
MTBE is a substance found in gasoline. Its volatility caused California and Nevada to ban it in 2004 and 2007, respectively. However, the chemical is still found in well water located in South Lake Tahoe.
In 2014, samples collected from a well used by Mark Twain Hotel on Park Avenue showed concentrations of MTBE above drinking-water standards. This was a result of the establishment’s former owners not having cleaned up the groundwater fully, despite complaints dating as far back as 1991.
Local wells in 13 other areas also indicated troubling amounts of MTBE. The wells were placed out of service, and South Tahoe Public Utility District took action against oil companies to win a multimillion-dollar judgment.
